So what math do we do, and
how do we do it?
I cannot overstate how important I believe it is to be good at the basics of math. I also believe that most everyone can achieve a high level of mastery of these skills.
I do not like our system of assigning grades like A, B, C, D and F to the basic math skills. I believe a student should learn a set skill until they are excellent with that math skill and then they should move on to the next skill.
It might take Sue only a day or two to learn the "times table" well. It might take Johnny a week. I believe Johnny should have the extra time to master the skill. He should not be penalized by a poor grade because it takes him longer to master this skill.
Let's allow them the opportunity to be excellent and not allow them to be mediocre.
