Platform I want to represent the voters' desires. I feel this may be the most important point in all of politics. I don't believe that today it really exists. I think the public votes in a representative and the public is stuck with that representative's beliefs/views. I'm hoping to be able to have an opportunity to hear what the constituents want and make decisions that represent them. One of my most basic "deciding factors" will be to support ideas that economically benefit the most students and hurt the fewest. I want our students to perform to the best of their abilities. I will never tell the students they have to like what they are doing. I will tell them, "the better that you do, the more choices you will have in controlling your future." If we give them a really good foundation, they'll be able to form any structure they want on top of it. If we expect excellence, especially in the basics of reading and mathematics, then we will only be increasing the likelihood of their future success. I want our teachers/employees to be the best and the happiest in the country. In my short time in Alaska, I have truly been mesmerized by the beauty and opportunities. I am constantly telling friends and people that I meet that this is the most amazing place I have ever been to. Being Alaska should be a huge part of our attraction; but, there is an inherent issue with being in a public school system (or most any public service entity), MONEY! We likely will never be able to pay our teachers (and other employees) the wages they are worth; but, we need to try to make sure that we do everything reasonable to make sure they are treated fairly and honestly. Any opportunities (within economic reason) to make the work environment better should be attempted. With recruiting and retention such a large issue we should try and behave/work in such a manner that our current teacher/employees become the district's best recruiting tool. I want all students, parents and employees to be personally responsible. I'll sum this up with a quote from the Tony Dungy's (Super Bowl winning coach of the Indianapolis Colts) father, "What are you going to do to make the situation better?" I want the public to approve ways/methods to make giant strides in their children's education. See "The Fine Print" section. |
